In the US, you can add a surcharge or a convenience fee to a transaction where applicable.
Surcharge is a fee that you may apply specifically to credit card transactions to help offset the cost of card processing. You must comply with regulatory and card network rules regarding the amount and application of surcharges.
Convenience fee is an additional charge for providing an alternative payment channel outside of your standard payment method (for example, online ticket purchases at a movie theater versus buying tickets in person). Some card schemes require you to disclose convenience fees when you offer multiple payment options (such as both in-person and online payments). You may also use convenience fees for other purposes, such as collecting tips.
You can submit surcharge and convenience fees at different stages of the payment, as per the table below:
Authorization | Full settlement | Partial settlement | Full refund | Partial refund | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Surcharge fee | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ 1 | ✅ 2 |
Convenience fee | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ 1 | ✅ 2 |
Whilst not mandatory, we highly recommend you submit your surcharge and convenience fees during authorization.
1 If you submit a surcharge or convenience fee during authorization, you are not required to submit the value when you request a full refund because we will include this for you. If you submit a surcharge fee during either the full or partial settlement stages instead, we advise you record the total surchargeAmount
in your full refund request.
2 For partial refund requests, some schemes require you specify the exact surcharge or convenience amount to be refunded.
Surcharge and convenience fees are not accepted in the same transaction.
