Unable to open IPC, Please check COM port

While initialising the IPC application, the error message ‘Unable to open IPC, Please check COM port' appears:

Possible causes

  • The PED is not set up correctly for a serial or USB connection.

  • For a serial PED, the comms speed (baud rate) of the PED is incorrectly set. For example, at 9600 baud per second (bps). The correct baud rate is 115200 bps.

  • For a serial PED, the YESEFTConfig utility has an incorrectly set COM port.

  • The PED is faulty.

Solution

Make sure that the PED is configured correctly:

iPP350 PED:

  • If the connection type is Serial, the PED should display a RS232 message.

  • If the connection type is USB, the PED should display a VCOM/USB message.

To change the connection method:

  1. Press Menu key

  2. Select RA1 and press Enter

  3. Enter password = “1985”

  4. Select TCP/IP Settings and press Enter

  5. Select ‘Client Setting’ and press Enter setting

  6. Select Remote Address and press Enter

  7. Enter your IPC host machine’s IP address press Enter

  8. Select Remote Port and press Enter

  9. Enter the port number and press Enter (This must match your IPC config)

Follow with these steps if you have chosen Static IP:

  1. Press Clear button to return to TCP/IP Settings menu

  2. Select IP Address then Subnet Mask then Default Gateway then Primary DNS then Secondary DNS

  3. Enter the associated address for each of the 5 selections and press Enter

Vx820 PED (with firmware from VIPA 7816 4.0.5.6)

If there a converter between the PED cable and the system port, the PED should be configured for the correct comms type.

  • If the converter type is USB to serial, the PED should display a RS232 message.

  • If the converter type is SERIAL to USB the PED should display a VCOM/USB message

To change the comms speed (baud rate) to 115200 bps, select the pinpad MENU option and follow these steps:

iPP350 PED:

  1. Press the Menu key

  2. Select RA1

  3. Enter the password ‘1985’ and press Enter

  4. Select Comms Speed

  5. Select 115200 bps

  6. The top of the screen will display the selected speed.

Vx820 PED (with firmware from VIPA 7816 4.0.5.6):

  • You may need to select the correct comms port in the IPC configuration. This is configured by using the YESEFTConfig utility (YESEFTConfig.bat).

  • To see if the PED is faulty, try it on a different till where both IPC and the PED are working correctly. For devices monitored for P2PE compliance this will trigger an alert in DMS.

  • You can check the available COM ports with a Windows computer by using Device manager > Ports.

Note: If IPC can't detect a PED on the COM port configured with the YESEFTConfig utility it will cycle through the available COM ports trying to detect a PED.

If IPC thinks that it detects the PED on another COM port, it will display a message asking you to change the configuration:
