Take repeat payments

Take Recurring and Card on File payments with Access Worldpay to speed up your customer's payment journey and improve acceptance rates.

Repeat payments are payments initiated on behalf of the customer by the merchant. For the payments to be initiated the payment details and customer must beverified. Repeat payments fall into two categories:

  • Recurring payments follow a schedule, such as subscription payments or payments in installments. A Recurring payment is an example of a Merchant Initiated Transaction (MIT) as the cardholder has agreed the merchant may bill them on an ongoing basis.
  • Card on File payments are made by the cardholder using the payment instrument details that have already been stored, such as one-click or in-app purchases. They differ from recurring payments as they don't follow a schedule and are not initiated by the merchant. A Card on File payment is an example of a Cardholder Initiated Transaction (CIT).

Warning: It is important to be compliant with Visa and Mastercard mandates regarding MIT and CIT payments. Access Worldpay ensures this by only providing repeat payment journeys that are compliant.

Scheme reference and intent

Both Scheme reference and intent are used to ensure compliance with Visa and Mastercard for payments using stored details.

  • The scheme reference is a way to link all payments made using stored payment details. This is created when performing theverification.
  • Recurring payments are typically used for installment or subscription payments
    • Installment - A limited series of transactions initiated by the merchant over a period of time for a single purchase of goods and services.
    • Subscription - An unlimited series of transaction initiated by the merchant for the purchase of goods or services provided over regular intervals.

By using Access Worldpay with the above journeys, you must ensure that the scheme reference and intent are included with your payment.
